5 Easy Steps to Cultivate a Lifelong Reading Habit

Have you ever left a book unfinished because you got distracted? Yes, I have. I loved reading as a child, but as I grew up, maintaining the habit became a challenge because of all the external noise around me. And one day, I just realised how much I missed my reading time, my “me” time, in the busy life. For me, reading has always been my space. A space where I sit with myself, talk with myself, listen to myself and introspect on my life. It’s my sacred space, touched by none.

Many people find it hard to make reading a regular habit, so if you struggle with this, you’re not alone. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult. I’ve listed a few simple changes below that can make a big difference. If you try to follow these five easy steps, you are helping yourself build a reading habit that lasts.

1. Don’t Overthink It: Start Small

Sometimes, we feel like reading too much and end up giving it up altogether. It’s better to start with small goals that fit your routine. For example, you could read for just 10 minutes a day or finish one chapter before bed. This process keeps reading simple and stress-free.

Once reading is part of your daily routine, you can slowly add more time. The main thing is to stay consistent. Even reading a few pages each day adds up over time. Setting realistic goals helps you keep going and stay motivated.

2. Read What You Actually Like

You like mysteries? Read it. Or you’re interested in non-fiction? Pick up one book. It’s much easier to build a reading habit when you enjoy what you’re reading. Pick books that interest you or match your mood.

You don’t have to finish books you aren’t enjoying. It’s okay to stop and start something new. The goal is to make reading fun, not a task. Trying different genres and authors can also keep things fresh and exciting.

3. Put Your Phone In Another Room

Where you read makes a big difference. I stress this 100%. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can relax without distractions. With good lighting and a comfortable chair, reading becomes a truly enjoyable experience.

Some people like to read with a cup of tea or coffee, or with soft background music. Try different things to see what helps you focus and enjoy your reading time. Having a special spot for reading signals to your brain that it’s time to read, making it easier to build the habit.

4. Attach Reading To A Daily Habit

Adding reading to your daily routine helps turn it into a habit. Try linking reading to something you already do, like after breakfast or before bed. You could also swap 10 minutes of screen time for reading, or listen to an audiobook during your commute.

Setting reminders or alarms can also help you remember to read. Over time, reading will start to feel natural, and you won’t have to think about it. The more you include reading in your day, the stronger your habit will become.

5. Keep A ‘Read’ List

Tracking your reading can help you stay motivated. You can use a journal, an app, or a calendar to record the books you finish or the pages you read each day.

While tracking is something many would like to do, I do not usually keep a track of my reading, but I’m in the process of building and experimenting with one. I find myself to be a spontaneous reader, and I choose to read another book once I finish one. For me, tracking feels like another chore and makes the process less enjoyable. I do make notes or underline stuff that I resonate with. That said, if tracking helps you stay motivated, you should try it. Giving yourself positive feedback makes building a reading habit more enjoyable and rewarding.

And finally,

Remember, building a reading habit is a journey, not a race. Start small, stay consistent, and let the joy of reading transform your life. For me, reading is more than a habit—it’s a way of life. I hope these tips help you find your own sacred space in the world of books. Also, I’d love to hear about your reading journey!
