A Man Called Ove is one of my favourite books. It’s one of those stories I can read over and over. I’ve reviewed it before, but today I want to share seven quotes from the book that changed how I see life. Maybe they’ll inspire you, too.

Hand holding "A Man Called Ove" book by Fredrik Backman in front of a cozy desk with a calendar, tissues, and stationery items.

1. A Man Called Ove, literally.

“People said Ove saw the world in black and white. But she was colour. All the colour he had.”

Ove’s life was plain and colourless until he met his wife. He found his life’s meaning through her connection. She was all the colour to his world. This quote tells us that routines can keep us steady, but relationships add colour and purpose. If you ever feel stuck in a routine, getting in touch with others can make life brighter.

2. The Importance of Tiny Gestures

“We always think there’s enough time to do things with other people. Time to say things to them. And then something happens, and then we stand there holding on to words like ‘if’.”

Ove’s honest words truly struck me. When you lose people you love, you sometimes wonder if there were things that could have been said or done while they were alive. This quote reminds us to show love and kindness while we can. Even tiny gestures matter and can change someone’s life, including our own.

3. Acknowledging Imperfection

“It takes a very long time to become young.”

This line is a great example of a paradox. When we’re young, we worry about many things and feel weighed down by expectations. In a way, that makes us act older than we are. Ove spent most of his life being strict, but by the end, he became freer, curious, and playful. It often takes a lifetime to realise that many things we stress about don’t really matter. Sometimes, you have to grow older to feel young and light again.

4. The Strength Revealed through Vulnerability

“Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives afraid of it. But if you think about it, it’s the very thing that gives life meaning.”

Being open about our feelings can help us enjoy life more. Ove’s story reminds us not to let fear stop us from living fully. This quote made me see that accepting how fragile life is can actually make us braver and more grateful.

5. The Merit of Persistence

“You can’t change other people, but you can be the kind of person others want to be around.”

We can be the change we want to see in others. It’s not easy to change people, but we can become the kind of person that anyone would like to be around. Ove is known for being rigid, but this quote shows his softer side: real change starts with us. It’s a lesson in persistence and self-improvement for anyone hoping to make a positive difference in their community or relationships.

6. Locating Joy in Unanticipated Places

“Sometimes you just have to jump off the cliff and build your wings on the way down.”

This quote is all about taking risks, even when we’re unsure. We need to take that first step. We need to show up for ourselves even when we’re not fully sure of the outcomes. We need to step out of our comfort zones at some point. Ove’s story shows us this quote visually. If you’re unsure about change, this line encourages you to trust the journey, most importantly, trust yourself.

7. The Meaning of True Friendship

“We are all a little broken, but last time I checked, broken crayons still colour the same.”

This metaphor captures the book’s message about relationships. We all have flaws, but they don’t make us any less valuable or less able to give and receive love. If you ever feel lonely or left out, this quote is for you.

These quotes from A Man Called Ove are more than words alone. They show a journey from loneliness to connection, from being closed off to opening up, and from fear to courage.

These are a few of my favourite quotes. I hope you’ll revisit this novel and reflect on it. Feel free to share your favourite lines or stories about how they touched you. Sometimes, the right quote at the right moment can make all the difference.
