I’ve always loved quiet reading spaces, but they’re hard to find in a busy city. Bookstores with a special atmosphere make reading feel different compared to regular stationery shops. They help us discover stories that go beyond their shelves. Hyderabad with its vibrant literary scene, boasts three beautifuI bookstores that I've had the pleasure to visit and thoroughly enjoyed.

Bookstore 1: Luna, the bookstore

Luna is located in the peaceful Jubilee Hills area and is always available when you need a cosy, calm place to relax and read. I first heard about Luna from a newspaper article in The Hindu, which introduced it as a new independent bookstore in town. It was founded in 2022 by two sisters, Sapna and Shilpa Sudhakar, to make their dream come true. Today, it's more like a family-owned bookstore.

Upon entering, you’re greeted by lush greenery and a fresh ambience. Inside, the warm brown tones create a cosy, home-like atmosphere.

Luna was one of the first bookstores in Hyderabad where I discovered a rare and diverse collection of books spanning many genres, all thoughtfully arranged.

Special features:

• Soft music plays in the background, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere.

• For each genre, personal handwritten notes are displayed.

• You get quality tote bags with the bookstore’s logo after purchase.

• Bookmarks are also available.

• The store collaborates with local stationery creators like Forest Berry.

  
  

I was always welcomed warmly, especially by Mr Prasad at the reception, who is passionate about reading and greets visitors with genuine enthusiasm.

Bookstore 2: Bahrisons Booksellers

Bahrisons Booksellers recently opened in Hyderabad following many successful years in Delhi. I found out about Bahrisons on Instagram and decided to visit right away. I was glad I did. The store’s bright colours and the wonderful aroma of Blue Tokai’s coffee downstairs made the visit special. It’s also located in the charming Jubilee Hills area.

Special features:

• The place feels sunny and cheerful, surrounded by lots of greenery.

• There are more than 50,000 books to choose from.

• You’ll find cosy spots for reading throughout the store.

• Downstairs, there’s Blue Tokai café with great coffee and a comfortable workspace.

The staff at Bahrisons are friendly and ready to help. They sometimes include extra bookmarks with your purchase, which is a nice touch!

Bookstore 3: Off The Shelf

While the first two bookstores are in Jubilee Hills, Off The Shelf stands out in Hitec City, Hyderabad’s IT hub. Sisters Manasa and Meghna Gummi founded this store, which comes alive with a cheerful energy when busy. It’s connected to the True Black cafe, and if you spend enough, you get a coupon for a free coffee of your choice.

• One wall is decorated with beloved book characters for a cosy, cute effect.
